Paper jams and poor print quality

Clear a jam without damaging the printer, and work out what streaks, faded pages, and smudges are telling you.

Jams and quality problems are mostly mechanical, and mostly things you can sort out at the machine. A few are not — this tells you which is which.

Clearing a jam safely

Pull paper in the direction it was travelling, slowly, with both hands. That is the whole technique. Pulling backwards against the rollers is what tears the sheet and leaves fragments behind, and fragments are what cause the next three jams.

  1. Read the display. It names the area — Tray 2, rear door, duplex unit, fuser. Start there rather than opening everything.
  2. Open the door it indicates and look before you reach.
  3. Pull steadily. If it resists strongly, stop and try from the other side rather than forcing it.
  4. Find every fragment. A torn corner left in the path guarantees a repeat. Use a torch.
  5. Close all doors firmly. The machine will not resume with one ajar, and it may still report a jam.
  6. Let it reset. It will run a short cycle and may eject a blank page.

The fuser is hot. It is the assembly near the rear, and it operates at around 200°C. If a jam is inside it, wait for the printer to cool or call us. A burn is not worth the two minutes saved. Never use anything metal to retrieve paper.

Jams that keep coming back

If the same machine jams repeatedly, it is telling you something:

  • Damp or curled paper. Paper absorbs moisture. Keep reams sealed until use and store them off the floor and away from windows.
  • Overfilled tray. Fill to the marked line, not to the top.
  • Fanning helps. Riffle the stack before loading to separate sheets stuck together at the cut edge.
  • Wrong paper setting. If the tray is set to plain paper and you have loaded card, the machine feeds it wrongly. Update the tray setting on the panel.
  • Worn rollers. If it consistently pulls two sheets, or fails to pick up at all, the pickup rollers are worn. That is a service item — tell us.
  • Guides not adjusted. The side guides should touch the paper without squeezing it.

Reading print quality problems

Faded or light overall — toner is low. Remove the cartridge, rock it gently side to side to redistribute, and reinstall. That buys you a few hundred pages, not a permanent fix. Also check whether an economy or draft mode is enabled in the driver.

A vertical line or streak in the same place on every page — usually the drum or imaging unit. Replaceable, and something to report rather than live with.

Toner smudges when you touch the page — the fuser is not bonding properly. Could be a wrong paper-type setting or a failing fuser. Report it.

Repeating marks at regular intervals down the page — something on a roller. Measure the gap between marks; that distance identifies which roller, and it genuinely helps us.

Grey background across the whole page — often a nearly-empty cartridge or a drum at end of life.

Blank pages coming out — check the sealing tape was removed from a new cartridge, then check toner level.

Colours wrong or misaligned — run the calibration routine from the front panel, usually under maintenance or setup. It takes a few minutes and fixes most colour drift.

Wrinkled or creased output — damp paper, or something in the paper path. Try a fresh ream from a sealed packet first.

Changing toner

  1. Check the display for which cartridge — on colour machines it is easy to grab the wrong one.
  2. Open the front cover and remove the old cartridge as the diagram shows.
  3. Take the new one out, remove all orange tape and packaging.
  4. Rock it gently a few times to distribute the toner evenly.
  5. Slide it in until it clicks. It should not need force.
  6. Close the cover. The machine will run a short calibration.

Do not shake a cartridge hard, and if toner spills, use a dry cloth or a vacuum designed for it — water sets toner permanently, and a normal vacuum will spread the powder.

When to call us

  • A jam in the fuser or somewhere you cannot reach safely.
  • A hardware error code on the display.
  • Repeated jams after you have tried fresh paper.
  • Quality problems that persist after a new cartridge.
  • Anything that needs a part.
